NOVEMBER 2007

FROM THE PASTOR

In the month of November many climates see the first dancing snowflakes and feel the icy blast of northern winds. This cold gray month foreshadows a long blustery winter which can be depressing for some who must contend with slippery roads on the way to work or the confinement of home because the weather makes the outdoors so uncomfortable. So it is a curious juxtaposition that we find national Thanksgiving situated in such an unforgiving month.
Lest we all fall victim to the politically correct jargon of our day that tends to get history very incorrect at times it may be good for us all to understand just how our Thanksgiving Day came to be. In a letter dated December 12, 1621 Edward Winslow wrote "...God be praised we had a good increase of Indian corn" by the goodness of God we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."
In what might be the first official government action in a national day of thanks President Abraham Lincoln issued this proclamation on October 3, 1863 in hopes that it would heal a nation broken by war. "The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies." They are gracious gifts of the most High God who while dealing with us in anger for our sins hath nevertheless remembered mercy ... I do therefore invite my fellow citizens ... to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him ... they do also with humble penitence ... fervently implore the imposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it ... to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and union."
Both letters give thanks to God. Both are cognizant of the fact that "every good gift and every perfect gift is from above." In this respect it seems that our people have lost sight of how blessed we are to live in such a wonderful country. This Thanksgiving many tables will be filled with an abundance of food that would make the first pilgrims feast look like a picnic basket. We have been blessed far above anything that we could ever imagine, and it is right for us to give thanks to God for His wonderful bounty.
The world would have us believe that it is by our own ingenuity that we have acquired this status. However our pilgrim ancestors and Abraham Lincoln know better. As we approach this wonderful holiday of giving thanks let us in the church lead the nation in songs of praise. We have a land that is fruitful, a government elected by our own choices and freedom that has been bought with the life’s blood of many heroes. As Lincoln so masterfully stated let us "implore the imposition of the Almighty" to continue blessing a grateful people and heal our nation. In these we could truly be thankful.
In Christ
Your Pastor

SERVICEMEN CHRISTMAS BOXES

One of our own church members, Cera Tillett Benbow, has been deployed to Iraq as a Marine helicopter pilot. She is the daughter of Ben and Harriett Tillett. It would be nice to send Christmas shoeboxes to her squadron to let them know we appreciate them. If you would like to fill a shoebox I've included a list of suggested items. Please wrap your box in Christmas paper and leave it in the church library. If you can't wrap it call me and I'll wrap it. The deadline to get these to the church is DECEMBER 5. Please include a little personal note in your box and if you want to include your name and address. I'm sure your help will be appreciated.

Join Us

The Crusader and Wesley Hambrick Sunday School Classes invite you to join us in Harris Hall at 9:45 A.M. on Sunday, November 11, for a program by Lt. Col. Benjamin K. Hodge. Ben, Lois McIver Winstead's son-in-law, is married to Kate Winstead and they have two children - John and Eleanor. A Chaplain with the 105th Engineer Group (NG) in Winston Salem, NC, he returned in September from a year's tour of duty in Tikrit, Iraq. In 2006 we mailed Christmas packages for him to distribute to his troops; and this year, we are expanding our efforts to collect funds for packages to be forwarded to Lt. Cera Tillett Benbow. Cera is the daughter of Ben and Harriett Tillett and stationed at Al Taquaddum Airbase southwest of Bagdad.
So, join us for a cup of Bruce Knapp's Best Coffee, Sybil's Scrumptious Deserts (any food she prepares is scrumptious) and an informative Sunday Morning with Ben on Veteran's Day Sunday!
