MAY 2008
FROM THE PASTOR
It is with great enthusiasm and dedication that we begin the Capital Campaign. Our prayer is that we come together as a church, excited about the possibilities this campaign offers. Also, we pray that our commitment results not only in the raising of the funds needed, but that it brings about an increase in participation and involvement in the church activities.
Listed below are ways for you to become involved:THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE
- Purchase Treasures of the Transformed Life. Read and participate in the study of this book as it will help lead us through this campaign. Books will be available in the Narthex before and after the church services. Price $8.00
- On Wednesday, May 7, at 6:00 P.M. come to the Fellowship Dinner (pig picking) in the Harris Hall. This free dinner kicks off the Capital Campaign. A count of the people attending is needed. Sign up sheets will be in the Narthex on Sunday, May 7th or you can call the church office to make your reservation.
- If there’s only one thing we remember from this entire campaign, let this be it: God must remain an essential part of everything we do. He is ready and willing to offer insight and help wherever it’s needed. In that vein Tania Edwards, The Prayer Coordinator for the campaign, is organizating volunteers to pray throughout this forty-day period of the campaign, praising God for all he has done for us and all he’s yet to do. Hopefully, we all will be in prayer about this campaign, but if you are willing to be a part of those designated to pray, please contact Tania at 599-3863.
2008-2009 Preschool Year
"I have come as light into the world...." John 12:46
We invite YOU to focus on our responsiblility as adults to provide for the needs, rights and well being of ALL young children...as we celebrate the "Week of the Young Child....."
A Child's Ten Commandments to Parents
- My hands are small; please don't expect perfection whenever I make a bed, draw a picture or throw a ball. My legs are short; please slow down so that I can keep up with you.
- My eyes have not seen the world as yours have; please let me explore unnecessarily.
- Housework will always be there. I'm only little for such a short time - please take time to explain things to me about this wonderful world, and do so willingly.
- My feelings are tender; please be sensitive to my needs; don\'t nag me all day long. (You wouldn't want to be nagged for your inquisitiveness). Treat me as you would like to be treated.
- I am a special gift from God; please treasure me as God intended you to do, holding me accountable for my actions, giving me guidelines to live by, and disciplining me in a loving manner.
- I need your encouragement, but not your praise, to grow. Please go easy on the criticism; remember you can criticize the things I do without criticizing me.
- Please give me the freedom to make decisions concerning myself. Permit me to fail, so that I can learn from my mistakes, then someday I\'ll be prepared to make the kind of decisions life requires of me.
- Please don\'t do things for me. Somehow that makes me feel that my efforts didn\'t quite measure up to your expectations. I know it\'s hard, but please don\'t try to compare me with my brother or my sister.
- Please don\'t be afraid to leave for a weekend together. Kids need vacations from parents, just as parents need vacations from kids. Besides, it\'s a great way to show us kids that your marrriage is very special.
- Please take me to Sunday School and Church regularly, setting a good example for me to follow. I enjoy learning about God.

MAY MISSION NEWS
HAND IN HAND
For any of us who might have been skeptical as to how much of a difference one adult can make in the life of one child in only one hour a week, here is a heartwarming story from our Hand in Hand ministry:
A third grade boy whom Leon Long had been tutoring was recently moved from South Elementary School to Stories Creek. And this boy asked "Mr. Long" if he would please come with him to his new school. So now Leon in spending one hour a week with his little fellow at Stories Creek, as well as one hour a week with a new student who has been assigned to him at South! Each week children are blessed by the dedication of volunteers like Leon.
With that in mind, All Hand in Hand Tutors, please note that there will be a Tutors’ Meeting on Tuesday, May 20 at 7:00 PM in the church library. At this meeting we will review the successes of our first year, as well as the challenges we’ve faced, and make plans for the 2008-2009 school year.
The next meeting of the Hand in Hand Prayer Team will be Wednesday, May 14, at 4:00 PM, at the home of Daphne Crumpton. At this meeting the team will consider how they, as a dedicated prayer group, might experience more fully our church's 40-day "Building on Faith" journey.
CHRISTIAN HELP CENTER
In addition to their ongoing need for canned meats, the Christian Help Center is almost completely out of peanut butter and jelly. Please remember these items as you maneuver the aisles of your favorite grocery store. And thank you from the CHC for your openhearted response to their plea for linens.
Also, on Friday, May 9, you can further aid the Christian Help Center by participating in a Hot Dog Lunch they will be providing from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Long Memorial UMC. You'll be able to enjoy a meal in the company of your neighbors, while supporting the CHC.
