AUGUST 2008

FROM THE PASTOR

By the time you receive this newsletter summer will be well on its way to being over. That is the bad news. However, there is some good news. As part of the North Carolina Annual Conference in preparation for Charge Conference, we are already engaged in a Bible study for evaluating and building healthy churches. This study is mandated by the Bishop's taskforce on healthy congregations. After we, the people of Long Memorial, have assessed our church we will then be asked to map out a strategy to take us to a greater level of health as a part of the kingdom of God.
This district Ministry Action Plan or MAP will focus on four distinct areas of church life. The first area of study will be the person and work of Jesus Christ. The task force rightly recognizes that every healthy church cannot function apart from our Lord and Savior. Colossians 1:18 reminds us that, "Jesus Christ is the head of the body, the church."
As a congregation centered in Christ, we then are given a mandate to make disciples. No matter where one may fall on the theological spectrum, we cannot evade the Great Commission. This is the second characteristic of a healthy church. Are we making disciples of Jesus Christ? If not perhaps we need to check our pulse. Any vision of the local church must end with discipleship. Being and making disciples is one goal about which there can be no argument.
The third area of study is spiritual formation. In the words of the task force this will concentrate upon passionate worship, the development of lay leadership and the stewardship of money, resources and time. This area of study is one that should involve every member of the church. Whether or not one can sing, play a musical instrument, preach, read scripture, help as an usher, be an acolyte or any number of other things we all participate in the worship service. The prayers, presence, time, talent and tithes are needed from every member of the church to help us be the very best we can be. There is a great witness to the community when our unchurched friends see that we are passionate about our Lord and His church.
Finally the task force identified risk taking ministry as the last piece of the healthy church puzzle. We at Long Memorial are blessed with many ways to fulfill a risk taking mission. We have a missionary who speaks fluent Spanish and is worshiping with us. Charles Owens has taken several trips to Latin America and is doing great risk taking things on behalf of the kingdom. Our mission committee that is chaired by Jackie Johnson is the best I have ever encountered in any church. Our Hand in Hand program has been very active at South Elementary and is now looking forward to another great year. If you are considering a place of service where you can be involved these areas are always in need of more volunteers.
As we all survey the landscape of a healthy church there will always be room for improvement. We, by the grace of God can and hopefully will become a robust church that will grow and glow for the glory of God.
In Christ
Your Pastor
T.R. Miller

We also collect box tops for education found on cereals and other food products. Bring those too!

Christian Help Center:

Thank you for your donations to the Christian Help Center during our "Thanksgiving in July" food drive. As we continue to experience a downturn in our economy, your generosity makes a huge difference to some in our community. The Center is very appreciative of your contributions and reports that they anticipate a continued need for meats and other protein products for the remainder of this year.

A Special Prayer:

The number of members on Long Memorial's Missions Committee has recently dwindled from six to four. So, at the appointed time, we will be asking the Nominating Committee for their assistance in recruiting new members. However, it isn't necessary to wait for an invitation from a committee to serve your church. If at any time you feel you are being called in any capacity, please let Reverend T.R. know. In the meantime, we will pray that a few of you will want to join us.
Your Mission Committee
Jackie Johnson, Chair.

A WORD ABOUT PRAYER

When I agreed to be the Prayer Coordinator for the Building on Faith Campaign, I have to admit I was somewhat naïve as to what to expect (or what was expected of me). Although my number has appeared in both the church newsletter, bulletins, and on the web my phone has not been "ringing off the hook." Most of those persons who have expressed their willingness to be in prayer for our church have been solicited from within already existing prayer groups.
Then it occurred to me that perhaps some might be intimidated, thinking they may not be able to honestly honor a commitment to pray. Few of us are contemplative by nature. We are active, practical people, whose days are already full. However, I'm sure many of you, without telling me, have already made this particular commitment to prayer.
If you, as an individual, or in your Sunday School class, are earnestly reading through Treasures of the Transformed Life and reflecting on its message, YOU ARE ALREADY PRAYING.
If you have placed the Family Prayer Card you received from the Capital Campaign Committee on your kitchen or dining room table and included its petition with your grace before meals, YOU ARE ALREADY PRAYING.
So please don't feel that you are not spending enough time in prayer to qualify it as a commitment. The Lord himself gave us a prayer consisting of only five sentences!
