SEPTEMBER 2008
"Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place." -- II Corinthians 2:14
It may well be argued that the church at Corinth was Paul's thorn in the flesh. They were the source of many headaches and heartaches. Paul spent much time in prayer and preaching to form those former pagans with very questionable morals into a church that was not an embarrassment to the Lord. However harsh Paul was with them, he always brought them back around to Jesus.
In this passage Paul uses the term "triumph" to describe the way in which the gospel message is spread throughout the world. According to Dr. Dennis Kinlaw, the triumph is an Etruscan word which takes its origins in the victory parade the Etruscan kings assembled upon their return from the battlefield. In the triumph the conquered king would lead the parade through the city. As the defeated king wound his way around the streets, he would be subjected to catcalls, curses, and the casting of objects. The humiliation of this only served to whet the crowd's appetite for more ominous things to come. At the end of the parade came the victorious king who then to the delight of the crowd would murder the victim as a sacrificial offering to the Etruscan gods.
Paul draws a very clear comparison to our Lord from this ancient custom. Jesus Himself leads the parade much as He did on that Good Friday when He carried His cross out of the city through the crowd of onlookers who jeered Him on His journey. At the end of that march, He was crucified. For those accustomed to the Etruscan triumph, that would have been the end, but thanks be to God it was not the end, only the beginning! Kinlaw reminds us that, "He was picturing Christ not as the conquering King but as the conquered King, the One who was to be the sacrifice."
Therefore we who follow Christ must understand the call to sacrifice. Jesus gave, "My back to those who struck Me and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide my face from shame and spitting." Isaiah 50:6. In our culture of 21st Century Christianity, the airwaves are filled with ministers and lay persons alike who trumpet the concept of victorious Christian living all of which is brought about by our faith seed gift, which is of course sent to the address on the screen and not some poor mission outpost in a far away land.
Paul understood the concept of sacrificial living for Christ. He wrote to the church in Phillippi, "But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord." Phil. 3:7-8. The call of Christ upon our lives holds the hope of eternal life coupled with a victorious life in this world. However, Christ would define victory in a very different way from how some might. Kinlaw reminds us, "If Christ leads the procession, then He leads us to an altar of self sacrifice, the Cross. It is a triumphal procession because out of the sacrifice of self the fragrance of the gospel comes."

This movie is about a fireman (Kirk Cameron) whose marriage is dissolving. Just before he heads to file for a divorce, his father, who is a Christian, talks him into doing what's called, "The Love Dare."
"It's a 40-day journey of applying Biblical principles to marriage. As he takes the journey, he gets more and more educated about what God intended for marriage, and he learns more about what love could be. He gets to win back the heart of his wife, but not without some twists and turns along the way." ©2008 ChristianCinema.com

Last year, the staff of South Elementary was so grateful for Long Memorial's generous response to their students' needs. We are confident we will be able to offer them the same support during this 2008-09 school year. Many thanks to all of you who have helped to get us off to such a great start!

ZOE
The Zimbabwe Orphan Endeavor (ZOE) is a project of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, which supports many orphans in Africa. The care of these orphans frequently falls upon either young siblings or upon the elderly, all trapped in poverty. For several years now, Long Memorial has contributed financial assistance to this ministry. Our gifts help provide medical care, food and clothing, as well as a variety of training, including vocational training to foster their financial independence.
Sunday, August 31, was designated as a special offering day for "ZOE" in our church. And we are thankful to all those who shared the good news of Christ's love by donating to this vital ministry.
AGAPE
Project AGAPE is a joint project of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the North Carolina Conference and the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. This ministry was established to help Armenia following a war, as well as a devastating earthquake. Long Memorial has helped support this mission for several years, and this year a special offering will be taken on September 19.
Your donations allow food to be directed to Armenia, provide medical supplies to hospitals and doctors, and make paper, pencils, computers and other teaching items available to teach and enrich lives of young Christians in Armenia. Your gifts will make a remarkable difference in this place of suffering.
CHRISTIAN HELP CENTER
Considering all of the appeals to your generosity, the Christian Help Center is so grateful that you also continue to support those less fortunate in your own community.

We also collect box tops for education found on cereals and other food products. Bring those too!
A SPECIAL PRAYER:
The number of members on Long Memorial's Missions Committee has recently dwindled from six to four. So, at the appointed time, we will be asking the Nominating Committee for their assistance in recruiting new members. However, it isn't necessary to wait for an invitation from a committee to serve your church. If at any time you feel you are being called in any capacity, please let Reverend T.R. know. In the meantime, we will pray that a few of you will want to join us.
