JUNE 2008

FROM THE PASTOR

Sooner or later, you'll discover it.
It's not some new math, some twisted form of algebra, or even a modified version of addition and subtraction; instead, it's often described as "God math," and it defies all sorts of human logic.
It works like this: You give money to the church or to someone in need, even though you don't really have it to give. You make a sacrifice. God then does a miraculous thing: Since you've done his business, he takes care of yours. You find that your own need is satisfied, sometimes in a surprising way.
Anne Frank summed it up in one of our weekly readings from Treasures of the Transformed Life: "No one has ever become poor by giving."
Did you ever wonder why?
It could be that being generous with our finances allows us to be rich in faith. The more we see "God math" in our own lives, the more confident we become that God really will meet all of our needs.
Besides all that, though, giving a regular proportion demonstrates to God that we consider him more important than we consider money. It keeps us from allowing money to become an idol in our lives. Have you ever thought about it that way?
The truth is, God doesn't just want our cash — even if it does help fund church programs and ministries. What he really wants is our hearts. He wants us to turn to him and say, "Whatever I have, it's yours."
Consider the Scripture verses presented in our Sunday school/small group meeting: "What can I offer the Lord for all he has done for me?" (Ps. 116:12 NLT).
It reminds us that we can never pay back God for his great gifts to us. One thing we can do, however, is cheerfully start with the tithe, the very least he asks of us. Set aside God's percent every week as soon as you receive your pay, and you'll never miss it. It will show God that you're serious about putting him first — and it will continue to give him opportunities to supply your every need, just as he promised he would.
In Christ
Your Pastor

MISSION NEWS

Hand in Hand

The meeting of the Hand in Hand tutors on May 20 helped to confirm that our partnership with South Elementary this school year has been blessed with many individual successes, as well as overall appreciation. Evaluation forms were completed by both the tutors and the teachers they served, relative to the tutors' work with their students. And these, in general, were very positive. The following two excerpts from tutors' evaluations, by their very similarity, affirm our welcome reception:
"It has been a great joy to be able to work with my student. The school personnel have always been very welcoming and courteous. I have had nothing but joy in serving in this area. I surely hope to be able to continue for many years to come."
"I have really enjoyed my experience at South Elementary. I have always felt welcomed and appreciated by the staff. I truly enjoy working with my students. They are very special to me and I hope to work with them next year."

And following is Principal Michael Ziemba's evaluation of the Hand in Hand program:
"Long Memorial is truly dedicated to South Elementary. The mentors have been consistent in their attendance. They are truly caring toward our children and committed to their academic and social growth. They have been a positive influence at the school the whole year."
This is a fitting time for all of us to recognize each of our tutors and thank them for the time and, most importantly, love, they have given to the children entrusted to them. And then please ask them why they have chosen to return to South Elementary next school year. You may find you want to join them!
They are: Mark Allen; Amy Bayliff; Kay and Nannette Carver; Will Carver; Tania Edwards; Glenn Long; Leon Long; Marcia Miller; Linda Morris; Martha Ann O'Hara; Betty Stewart; and Charles Owens.
We must also thank all the other Hand in Hand volunteers who have contributed so much to the success of our ministry. In addition to the Prayer Team and Card Encouragement Team, there are all of those who have helped whenever called upon. You've generously contributed school supplies, volunteered as test monitors, and helped with special events, such as the teacher’s farewell breakfast we will host on June 11.
Martha Allen has very nicely summed up our contribution to South Elementary this school year:
"Thank you for ALL you have done!! A wonderful job!"

Christian Help Center:

The hot dogs served at the Christian Help Center's fund-raising lunch on May 9 were delicious. We hope you had a chance to enjoy them.
And although the CHC has a surplus of canned vegetables, their supply of canned meats and canned milk is still low. Dry goods needed are boxed macaroni and cheese, sugar and flour (preferably in 2 pound sacks), and dry milk. And, of course, there's always room for the children's favorite, PB&J.

A Special Prayer:

The number of members on Long Memorial's Missions Committee has recently dwindled from six to four. So, at the appointed time, we will be asking the Nominating Committee for their assistance in recruiting new members. However, it isn't necessary to wait for an invitation from a committee to serve your church. If at any time you feel you are being called in any capacity, please let Reverend T.R. know. In the meantime, we will pray that a few of you will want to join us.
Your Mission Committee
Jackie Johnson, Chair.

A WORD ABOUT PRAYER

When I agreed to be the Prayer Coordinator for the Building on Faith Campaign, I have to admit I was somewhat naïve as to what to expect (or what was expected of me). Although my number has appeared in both the church newsletter, bulletins, and on the web my phone has not been "ringing off the hook." Most of those persons who have expressed their willingness to be in prayer for our church have been solicited from within already existing prayer groups.
Then it occurred to me that perhaps some might be intimidated, thinking they may not be able to honestly honor a commitment to pray. Few of us are contemplative by nature. We are active, practical people, whose days are already full. However, I'm sure many of you, without telling me, have already made this particular commitment to prayer.
If you, as an individual, or in your Sunday School class, are earnestly reading through Treasures of the Transformed Life and reflecting on its message, YOU ARE ALREADY PRAYING.
If you have placed the Family Prayer Card you received from the Capital Campaign Committee on your kitchen or dining room table and included its petition with your grace before meals, YOU ARE ALREADY PRAYING.
So please don't feel that you are not spending enough time in prayer to qualify it as a commitment. The Lord himself gave us a prayer consisting of only five sentences!
